I have learned those same steps can, and has, helped me solve any issue that arises. Since I have gotten sober my life actually has meaning to it. I no longer drift by day by day trying to find drugs. I have goals, ambitions and a desire to enjoy life now. My sobriety means everything to me because it unlocked the door to my future. Soon we found couples who had the same interest. There were many times after getting together with another couple that I drove home in a blackout. As I sit here writing this story, a counter on my computer desktop indicates that I have been sober 2,105 days, one day at a time. However, what amazes me about this time is that it is 25,000 times the duration I could go at the end of my drinking career without having the need or the craving to have alcohol.
Our marriage became further strained, as my wife apparently still wanted additional children. I underwent a reversal of the vasectomy, and soon thereafter, my wife was pregnant with our third healthy child. After six years, I was becoming dissatisfied with work because I didn’t feel I had adequate support from my group or the hospital.

Part of that is taking proper care of myself in the first place so there isn’t as much stress that needs to be relieved later. Cutting alcohol from my diet has been a marathon, not a sprint. I did a month-long “dry January” in both 2018 and 2019. A personally turbulent 2019 left me wondering if I should quit alcohol altogether, so I challenged myself to cut it for an entire year. I never had any run-ins with the administration or faculty and did not think that I had any kind of problem. Off to college I went, at a major university in Washington, DC, with plans to study chemistry with a minor in psychology in a pre-med curriculum. None of my roommates, five in a dorm suite, drank or partied like I did. Within a week I was able to find another room with three sophomore roommates who were just like me. Within a short period of time, harassing the fourth roommate with obnoxious merriment, I was able to convince that non-partying roommate to swap rooms.
Does a relapse erase progress?
The important thing to remember is that relapse does not erase all of your progress; rather, it teaches you how to overcome difficult situations as they come.
Maybe one day I will talk about specific situations I’ve been in because of alcohol, but suffice it to say I got myself into a variety of life-threatening and just straight-up embarrassing situations. Looking back now and knowing what I know, my relationship with alcohol has never really been a healthy one. The problem with crystal methamphetamine treatment is that no prescribed medication can help to soothe withdrawal symptoms. Anyone addicted to crystal meth needs to go cold turkey. The remarkably addictive nature of the drug makes detoxing and staying clean challenging.
What I Learned in the First Year Sober
I believe that people who experience addiction, get sober, and heal themselves are some of the most introspective, intelligent, interesting, and self-aware people out there. I’ve found that to be true of every single person that I’ve met in person or spoken to online in the recovery community. Once I quit drinking on April 12th, it wasn’t like it was all smooth sailing from there. It’s challenging, it’s beautiful, it’s mind-blowing, and it’s excruciating — all rolled into one. The best way I can describe the intensity of it is to say that it’s like having a 20-year mental & emotional growth spurt condensed into one year. I rode back in a taxi to the airport crying and promising myself I would get help when I got home.
RR is an instrumental part of my recovery. Today, Jeff is content and comfortable with who he is, taking on life’s challenges while keeping an active recovery program at the forefront of his journey. Dom’s drinking was abnormal out the gate at 14 years old.
My IOP cup represents where I was at that time, with the phrase “All you need is Love.” To me that means self-love as well as genuine love for others. Like I previously mentioned, I’ve been sober since November 2008 and it wasn’t until 2013 that I found running. Although I know deep down inside I will never use or drink again, I still had a void in my life that needed to be filled. The two years leading up to May 2013 when I found running I was becoming a squirrely mess.
